How Many Porta Potties is Too Many?

“How many portable toilets will I need?” We get this question a lot, which is why we developed a handy guide to help you estimate how many porta potties you’ll need.

Generally speaking, you’ll need one portable toilet for every 50 guests for every 3 hours, which sounds simple enough. However, the math can get a bit tricky depending on the details of your event. As a result, you may be left wondering how many porta potties is too many.

The simple answer is, you can never have too many porta johns! Okay… if you have more toilets than people at your event, that might be too many!

But seriously, when it comes to portable restrooms, more is always better because it results in:

  • Shorter Lines

More bathrooms equal shorter lines. That means that your guests get to spend more time enjoying your event, which is even more important at special events like weddings.

Shorter lines also result in greater guest satisfaction, which is crucial when you’re charging for admission or fundraising.

  • More Options

Just like waiting in line, having to walk a long way to find a bathroom takes away from guests’ enjoyment of your event as well. (It can also be a recipe for disaster at family-friendly events where there are many younger children.)

Events that are held over a wide geographic area should offer plenty of bathroom options for guests that are close to their location no matter where they are. This convenience is something that guests really appreciate because it means that they don’t all have to stay clustered in one area or walk a long way back to the bathrooms.

  • Cleaner Units

When your guests have fewer toilets to use, each one gets used more often. That results in messiness and unpleasant smells accumulating faster because the tanks get filled up more quickly with toilet paper and waste. Conversely, when your guests have more units to choose from, they get filled up more slowly. This probably won’t matter much if your event is just a few hours long. However, if you’re planning an all-day event, this can make a real difference by the end of your event.

  • Greater Accessibility

Typically, event planners will only rent one ADA-compliant unit for every 5-20 standard units. These bigger units are not only easier for people with mobility issues to use, they’re also great for families that need to get multiple children and/or strollers inside. The more total units you rent, the more likely you are to rent additional handicapped accessible units. This improves the accessibility for your event overall, which is always a great thing!
