Tips For Using A Portable Toilet When It’s Cold

We’ve been there. It’s cold outside, and you have to go. Whether you’re attending a holiday party, outdoor festival, or other wintertime event, hopefully, you’ll have access to clean and accessible restrooms. Here are some tips to consider as you venture out into the cold.

Remove Extra Winter Wear

Winter means wearing bulky gear to keep warm, making using a small bathroom even harder. The most important tip we can give you when using a porta-potty in cold weather is to take off anything that could fall off inside. Gloves, hats, scarves, and accessories like purses can fall to the ground and get wet and dirty – or worse, fall inside the holding tank and get ruined. Take off your gear and have a buddy standing outside hold onto them for you.

Go During Daylight

Try and use a portable restroom before the sun sets. It will be warmer during daylight hours and much easier to see as you try to maneuver inside with winter clothing on. This is not always possible, but keep this tip in mind for when you’re able to plan ahead.

If your event has portable restroom trailers, use these instead of regular porta-potties at night. Luxury restroom trailers like Kerkstra’s have interior lighting and warm running water, making them way more convenient and comfortable during the winter.

Close and Lock the Door

This may sound obvious, but keep the door closed to avoid getting hit with cold winds. Sometimes people keep the door slightly ajar when a child or elderly relative is inside, going to the bathroom to help them if needed. But if it’s a windy day, you run the risk of the door blowing wide open unexpectedly. In chilly weather, it’s better to go inside with them to minimize how much cold air comes in.

Get Out and Get Warm

When nature calls, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do – even in the winter. If the potty options are particularly chilly, seek out ways to warm up after you’ve done your business. Get your gloves back on, find a space heater, and huddle up with your crew. Treat yourself to a hot chocolate, apple cider, or mulled wine. You’ll warm up your hands and your insides! Just be careful not to drink too much and end up back in the potty where you started!
