Where Does Porta Potty Waste Go?

Where does porta potty waste go? Truthfully, this is a question we don’t get asked a lot. However, we know some of you out there are wondering about the poop journey!

A recent Popular Science article estimated that there was 250,000 pounds of waste deposited into portable toilets during the NYC marathon. All this organic matter had to be hauled away in a clean and timely manner, making it a huge job for any portable toilet supplier. It may surprise you to learn that this process isn’t any different for smaller events.

After every event waste is pumped out of porta potties. An industrial “vacuum” of sorts transfers waste to septic trucks. The waste from multiple units is consolidated into the tank and is then taken to a treatment plant. At treatment plants, waste is broken down (typically with microbes) and processed.

While the waste is on its way to poop heaven, each porta potty unit is thoroughly cleaned. Disinfectant is used to prepare it for another event. It’s then delivered to its next location sparkling clean, and fully stocked!

So, there you have it! If you have any questions about porta potties, post them in the comments below and we’ll do our best to answer them in future posts.
