It’s more than a headcount. A good starting point is our porta-potty calculator on the website, which helps estimate the number of units needed based on attendance and event duration. But festival events have variables that change the math fast. A 5,000-person, 10-hour event with food and drink service needs around 116 units. Alcohol service, large grounds, and multi-day formats all push that number up. Before landing on an official number, talk through your specific event with our team. We’ll make sure you’re covered.
As early as possible. Michigan summers are Kerkstra’s busiest season, and peak weekend availability goes fast. Large events requiring 50-plus units should ideally be booked several months out. The earlier you lock it in, the more options you have. We’ll work with last-minute requests when availability allows.
Yes. All public events must provide accessible restrooms. At a minimum, one ADA-compliant unit is required (or 5% of all portable units used). For larger events, having accessible units distributed across the grounds near family areas, spectator seating, and parking zones is best practice.
Spread them out. A cluster of units in one corner of a 40-acre site doesn’t help the people on the other end. Distribute units across the grounds and cover your high-traffic zones: entrances, exits, main stages, concessions, and parking lots. Place them near food service areas but away from direct food prep. Every unit also needs to be accessible for service trucks during the event. Kerkstra can help you map a placement plan based on your specific grounds layout.
