Winter weddings provide the backdrop for some of the most romantic nuptials and elegant celebrations of any time of the year. Capture the magic of the season in your big day with your own easy (and inexpensive) winter-themed centerpieces. Going DIY allows you to put your own stamp on your wedding reception while saving money. And, if you’re naturally creative, you’ll probably have a lot of fun doing it as well! (If you’re not that creative or crafty, you can always recruit family and friends to help!)
Here are some of the best centerpiece ideas we’ve seen at winter weddings in years past:
Candles
Nothing captures the romance of the season by bringing candlelight into your celebration. We’ve seen couples integrate candles in the marriage ceremony, during the cocktail hour, and at the reception as well. The great part about using candles is that they’re affordable when bought in bulk and can be used basically anywhere.
Whether you choose to use pillar candles, tealights, or a combination of the two, you can place candles on gift tables, the cake table, the head table, and guest tables. An assortment of candle heights and colors is a simple way to create beautiful centerpieces on your tables. It also sets the mood by creating a soft ambiance if you keep the rest of the lighting low.
A word of caution though, check with your wedding venue to ensure that they’ll let you use real candles. Some venues don’t allow open flames because their insurance policy prohibits it. In these cases, you can buy or rent flameless candles. If you plan far enough in advance, you can even order LED candles that are customized with the date and the couple’s name and then let guests take them home as favors. That checks two items off your to-do list!
Branches
Using vases with decorative branches is a neat way to bring the feeling of nature into your wedding reception while keeping it elegant. You can either use artificial branches or get some real branches and spray paint them to match your wedding colors.
Branches create statement pieces that will immediately draw attention and delight guests. These tall centerpiece ideas are a good way to add height and dimension to your celebration without preventing guests from being able to see each other on opposite sides of the table.
Metallic and Sparkles
Metallic colors, and sparkles are a more feminine touch, but they add a lot of shimmer to any wedding. You can choose to use shades of silver, gold, or bronze exclusively, or combine them to create a lavish look across your entire venue. Depending on the size of your venue and the hues you choose, you may want to offset them with some candlelight or floral elements to balance the boldness of your metallic accents.
Icy Accents
Bringing in ice sculptures often isn’t practical from a budget standpoint, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create the striking look of ice for less. Using icy accents like translucent glass centerpieces or silver-blue ribbon to adorn your tables is a great way to create an icy look on a budget. Additionally, using water gives the illusion of ice and is easy to set up and clean up. If you want to combine effects, you can always fill elegant glass containers with water and light floating candles on top. If candles aren’t your thing, you can float other items like cranberries, pinecones, or colored beads.
Repurposed Holiday Decorations
The winter is best known for the holidays like Christmas, Chanukah, and New Year’s, which makes using holiday decorations an obvious choice for your wedding. Repurpose decorations by using them in unexpected ways like stacking them in pyramid shapes, attaching them to rustic barn wood, or using them functionally on tables. We’ve seen creative ideas like using Christmas ornament hooks as napkin holders with little baubles attached to them and filling champagne glasses with tinsel. The sky’s the limit when it comes to repurposing your favorite holiday decorations!
