How Many Porta Potties is Too Many?

“How many portable toilets will I need?” We get this question a lot, which is why we developed a handy guide to help you estimate how many porta potties you’ll need.

Generally speaking, you’ll need one portable toilet for every 50 guests for every 3 hours, which sounds simple enough. However, the math can get a bit tricky depending on the details of your event. As a result, you may be left wondering how many porta potties is too many.

The simple answer is, you can never have too many porta johns! Okay… if you have more toilets than people at your event, that might be too many!

But seriously, when it comes to portable restrooms, more is always better because it results in:

  • Shorter Lines

More bathrooms equal shorter lines. That means that your guests get to spend more time enjoying your event, which is even more important at special events like weddings.

Shorter lines also result in greater guest satisfaction, which is crucial when you’re charging for admission or fundraising.

  • More Options

Just like waiting in line, having to walk a long way to find a bathroom takes away from guests’ enjoyment of your event as well. (It can also be a recipe for disaster at family-friendly events where there are many younger children.)

Events that are held over a wide geographic area should offer plenty of bathroom options for guests that are close to their location no matter where they are. This convenience is something that guests really appreciate because it means that they don’t all have to stay clustered in one area or walk a long way back to the bathrooms.

  • Cleaner Units

When your guests have fewer toilets to use, each one gets used more often. That results in messiness and unpleasant smells accumulating faster because the tanks get filled up more quickly with toilet paper and waste. Conversely, when your guests have more units to choose from, they get filled up more slowly. This probably won’t matter much if your event is just a few hours long. However, if you’re planning an all-day event, this can make a real difference by the end of your event.

  • Greater Accessibility

Typically, event planners will only rent one ADA-compliant unit for every 5-20 standard units. These bigger units are not only easier for people with mobility issues to use, they’re also great for families that need to get multiple children and/or strollers inside. The more total units you rent, the more likely you are to rent additional handicapped accessible units. This improves the accessibility for your event overall, which is always a great thing!

5 Things Every Portable Restroom Supplier Should Provide

If you’re planning an event, you’re likely evaluating different portable restroom suppliers, but are you comparing the right features? Most people just look at price and assume that the other details are basically the same. However, this is a big mistake!

Restroom services can vary widely based on the provider, so you need to know what to look for! Otherwise, you can end up spending more money later or having your event ruined when the units you rent fail to live up to expectations.
These are the top 5 things that every portable toilet supplier should provide for your event:

  • Quality Service

Before you book anything, you should have a positive experience with the toilet supplier you’re using. Everyone you deal with should be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. If they can’t give you a straight answer to your questions, or help you determine exactly what you need for your event, you should look elsewhere. The company you choose should also have enough experience with similar events that they can consult on what will work best, possibly even suggesting different options (like luxury restroom trailers) that you may not have considered.

  • High Quality Units

The toilet units themselves should match the expectations that the portable restroom supplier has set, which means that they should be well-maintained and arrive clean. If the units that you’re going to rent look old or beat up, it’s likely that the company that owns them hasn’t taken proper care of them (which can be indicative of their overall business practices). The units should all arrive stocked with sanitary fluid in the tank, toilet paper on the roll, and hand sanitizer in the pumps. Missing any of these key essentials or having dirty interiors indicates that the supplier didn’t take the time to properly clean them after the last rental.

  • Proper Placement

At the event, the restroom units should be placed out of the way so that they don’t attract too much attention. You want them to be conveniently placed, but not the start of the event. They should be readily accessible to attendees (this is especially true of ADA compliant units). Toilets should be placed on dry, level ground as well to avoid tipping over.

  • Clean Units

After every rental, toilet units must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Without a proper cleaning, messes and smells can linger, creating an unpleasant experience for users. This requires using the right products to get the job done effectively.

  • Expertise

Don’t choose a fly-by-night company! Trust your event to a team of experienced professionals. Companies that specialize in rented restrooms instead of offering it on the side are more dependable and have better equipment to choose from for your event. Rely on a supplier with a longstanding reputation for excellence instead of one that just offers the lowest price to ensure that your event will go off without a hitch.

Event Planning – How Many Portable Toilets Will I Need?

The most common question we get in this business is “How many toilets will I need?”

We get asked this by regular people planning private events as well as seasoned event planning pros alike, so we wanted to take the opportunity to break it down for you.

Regardless of the size of your event, having enough bathrooms is crucial in ensuring that guests will be able to enjoy themselves. No one wants to have their guests waiting in long lines (or leaving) to use the bathroom! That’s why it’s so critical to get it right from the outset of your event!

(Trust us, you don’t want to be the guy calling frantically asking to have more porta potties delivered mid-event!)

Use Our Planning Chart

We have a helpful chart to help estimate how many units you’ll need for your event. It’s a grid that simply multiplies the number of hours for your event by the number guests expected. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect that one porta potty unit can service up to 50 guests for up to 3 hours. For events where the number of attendees is unknown, you should round your estimates up to prevent finding yourself in a situation where there aren’t enough bathrooms for all the families and individuals that show up.

Consult the Pros

Our planning chart provides an estimated number of units that you’ll need, but if you want a more customized recommendation based on the type of event and the geographic size of the event, you can always give us a call at 888-320-9992 and we’d be happy to help you out!

As professionals, we have many years of experience in the portable restroom business, which means that we know best when it comes to rental toilets. We know when to recommend luxury restroom trailers versus standard porta potties, and we have all of the add-ons that you’ll need to keep your event sanitary!

Scale Up or Down

If the event you’re planning has been held before, you can scale up or down based on your previous experience. Typically this means learning from past mistakes and getting more toilets and trailers than you’ve had in previous years to better accommodate guests.

Do You Really Need Portable Bathrooms?

As a general rule, if you think you may need portable restrooms, you probably do! Whether you’re hosting a special event or planning a function, bathrooms are a must-have.

That’s not to say that you should only rent portable bathrooms if the location you’re using doesn’t have any bathrooms at all though! We frequently rent porta potties and luxury restroom trailers for events where there are established bathrooms already in place. In these cases, rentals are meant to supplement or replace the existing bathrooms because they’ve fallen short of expectations for one reason or another.

These are the top cases for when you absolutely need portable bathrooms:

Number

If there aren’t enough bathrooms for your size event, adding to the available number with some rented units is a great way to ensure that attendees can enjoy themselves instead of having to wait in long lines. Shorter wait times also entice more families to attend and guests to stick around longer instead of leaving early.

Remember, you can never have too many restrooms. No one is never going to fault you for providing extra options, but they will certainly voice their disappointment if there aren’t enough bathrooms to go around.

Location

If bathrooms are inconveniently located or spaced too far apart, bringing in rented bathrooms gives event attendees more convenient options. Ensuring that you have well-placed bathrooms increases guest satisfaction by providing guests with more time to enjoy the main event.

Depending on the nature of your event, you may also want to provide various restroom tiers in different locations for different groups to enjoy. For instance, we often provide portable restroom solutions for 5K and 10K races as well as half and full-marathons. In these cases, we typically set up a bank of porta johns for spectators to use, as well as luxury portable restroom trailers for the athletes to change inside after the competition. Their paid race entry entitles them to use these more premium restrooms (as well as other amenities from the race organizers).

Niceness

If the available bathrooms aren’t very nice, people will often forgo using them and just leave your event early so that they can do their business elsewhere. Additionally, if the available bathrooms don’t have much-needed amenities (climate-controlled interiors, exterior lighting, running water, etc.) attendees may not use them while at your event or simply avoid your event altogether.

5 Ways Porta Potties Benefit Local Parks

I bet you didn’t think portable toilets were a huge asset to the parks in your community, right? Well, believe it or not, portable bathrooms actually provide a very real benefit to the parks and other recreational areas where they’re located. Find out how the humble porta potty helps to improve your favorite park spaces:

  1. Gives People a Place to Go to the Bathroom
  2. The most obvious benefit that portable toilets provide is a place for people to go to the bathroom.

The fact of the matter is that people will have use the restroom whether or not there’s one around. Having well-placed toilets gives people the opportunity to do their business in a civilized manner instead of just peeing in the woods. Simply put, without porta potties, your public park will suffer the unsanitary consequences of people just going to the bathroom wherever they choose instead of in a designated private area.

  3. Provides a Way for People to Get Their Hands Clean
  4. Parks are a great place to have a picnic or a snack while playing, which means that it’s important to give visitors a way to get their hands clean. While most porta potties don’t provide sinks (some do, but they’re more deluxe units), they’re all stocked with hand sanitizer pumps. Whether it’s caregivers and parents, pet owners, or kids – everyone needs a way to get clean when enjoying the outdoors. Having access to this feature is great for anyone who needs to get their hands cleaned off, especially if they plan on eating. This is another way that portable toilets make parks more sanitary.

  5. Signals that The Park is Regularly Maintained
  6. You can tell the difference between parks that are regularly maintained and those that are not. Well-maintained parks have nicely mowed areas, trash that’s picked up, and toilets that are regularly serviced by a portable portable toilet supplier. Having toilets that are kept clean and fully stocked with paper and hand sanitizer is a surefire sign that a park has a maintenance presence, which tends to make them safer. People who are hiking or biking alone, and families look for these types of amenities because they make them feel more at ease.

  7. Attracts Families
  8. We touched on this before, but families seek out places with perks that will help them to create an enjoyable time together. By having porta potties near parking areas, by eating areas, and along trails, you can attract more families. Parents are always looking for readily accessible bathrooms to avoid accidents, which means that providing them can attract bigger groups.

  9. Encourages Longer Visits
  10. People don’t tend to stay too long at parks where there aren’t the creature comforts of home. If visitors can’t find a place to go to the bathroom, they’ll typically cut their visits short so that they won’t get in a bind where they need to use the bathroom and one isn’t available. Providing portable toilets encourages people to stick around and can help make your park a destination instead of just a waypoint.

The 5 Worst Things That Can Happen While Using a Porta Potty (… and How to Avoid Them)

toilet paper rolls
Some people are actually afraid of using porta potties – not of strong smells or seeing something gross, but of actual calamity striking while using them. If you have portatoiletphobia (we’re probably the first ones to coin that term), don’t fear! Here are the five worst things that can happen to you while using a porta potty, and how to smartly avoid them:

  1. Dropping Your Phone in the ToiletIf you carry your phone in your back pocket the chances of you dropping your phone into a toilet at home or elsewhere are actually quite high. This means that you may run into a situation where your cell phone falls into a portable toilet. If this happens, you shouldn’t try to get it out yourself. The blue chemicals that go into a portable toilet shouldn’t come into contact with your skin for long periods of time (i.e. while you try to fish your phone out), not to mention the obvious dangers of coming into contact with other people’s waste. Instead, just focus on not dropping it in the first place. If the portable toilet unit has a shelf, use it to store your phone while you use the facilities, or tuck it elsewhere into your clothes or a bag to keep it safe. Better yet, ask a friend or family member outside to hold it while you use the bathroom.
  2. No PaperRunning out of toilet paper can be daunting no matter where it happens. Before using a porta potty, always check to make sure that it’s fully stocked with toilet paper. If it’s empty, get out of the unit and get back in line to wait for another one to become vacant. As a backup, always keep some tissues in your pocket when using a public bathroom of any kind just in case. This will help to safeguard against a situation where all the available toilets are out of paper.
  3. No Hand SanitizerJust like toilet paper, check to make sure that the unit you’re about to use is stocked with hand sanitizer so that you can clean your hands after using it. If there are hand washing stations or hand sanitizer banks elsewhere, you can always do your business and then head for those locations after leaving the porta potty.
  4. Stepping in SomethingSince portable toilets are designed to provide bathrooms outdoors, it’s always possible for someone to step in something unsavory and track it into the bathroom on their shoes. If you’re the unlucky person who uses it next and then steps in what they left behind, your shoes can pay the price. Before using a portable toilet, check the floor to make sure no one has left anything yucky in there. Since it’s harder to see at night, you can always bring a small flashlight to help illuminate the unit.
  5. Getting Stuck InsideThis is the kind of thing that childhood folk lore is made of, but the odds of this happening are so extraordinarily slim, that it’s not worth worrying about. You really can’t get stuck inside a portable toilet that’s still standing upright.

Renting Portable Toilets 101

toilet sign
Need to rent portable toilets for your upcoming event or function? Here’s everything you need to know in one quick guide:

Book in Advance

There’s nothing worse than planning an event and then finding out at the last minute that you forgot to secure a vendor and now you don’t have any decent options left because they’re all booked up. Remember, there’s no such thing as planning too far in advance! So as soon as you have a few possible dates selected, call your preferred portable toilet supplier right away to see what kind of inventory they have for each of your available dates. This will help you narrow down a date and get on their calendar so that you have one of the most important elements squared away.

Use a Local Company

Here’s a little secret that no one tells you – using a local portable toilet company is always cheaper than using a big name national company. The reason for this is because the national companies simply take reservations for events and then contract with local companies to supply the portable toilets for them. This means that you’re paying for a middle man instead of just going to the supplier directly, which drives up the cost. Save yourself the money and just choose a local company to start with!

Get Enough

The biggest mistake you can make when renting portable toilets is not getting enough. Ensure that your guests won’t have to wait in line too long by getting enough units. If you need help deciding how many porta potties to rent, check out our planning chart.

Understand the Cost

Some portable restroom suppliers just charge by the unit, while others add-on a trip charge depending on how far away the units need to be delivered. If you’re having a multi-day event, you may also be billed for having the units pumped out once they fill up mid-event. Understand ahead of time what you’ll be billed for and what the total cost will be so that you can plan appropriately.

All About Construction Restrooms

Looking for information on construction porta potties? You’ve come to the right place! We provide portable restrooms for construction sites across Michigan, which means that we have all the information you need!

What

You have several options to choose from when it comes to construction bathrooms. The first option is a standard portable toilet unit. This no-frills unit has a toilet, urinal, and hand sanitizer dispenser inside.

Another option is a crane rack portable toilet, which has an arm that can be raised or lowered to allow for easy lifting mobility. These units have sturdy legs that are attached to enable secure crane lifting. Crane rack portable toilets are great for positioning on various levels of a buildings that are under construction or atop of any other elevated area.

Lastly, portable toilet roller units are on wheels to allow them to be moved in elevators or along level surfaces. Locking casters ensure that these units won’t move when you don’t want them to or while they’re in use. These are great for high-rise construction areas and come with a toilet and hand sanitizer dispenser inside as well as a urinal on the back.

If you don’t like the idea of having standalone units, you can always opt for a restroom trailer. Portable restroom trailers allow for 2-10 people to use the restroom simultaneously, which is a definite advantage on busy high-traffic construction sites. The interiors of these units are much more luxurious than their porta potty counterparts. Bathroom trailers are climate-controlled, have running water, flushing toilets, and many other amenities to satisfy employees in all weather.

Why

Having onsite restrooms improves employee morale and efficiency. A clean portable restroom located at a job site sends a message that your company cares about employee needs. It also makes for a cleaner jobsite because it provides a way to do their business and then easily get germs off hands.

How

At a minimum, you should have 1 portable toilet unit for every 10 employees working a 40-hour work week. This means that if you have employees working more than 40 hours in a week, you should get extra capacity tanks or additional units to accommodate the extra hours on the job.
You don’t want employees having to go a distance to use the restroom because it will lead to lost productivity and animosity. The ideal distance to position a portable toilet is within 75-100 feet of the work area. This distance should be measured from where employees are actually working, not where they’re parking, entering the jobsite, or eating lunch.

Emergency Portable Toilet Rentals

When people think about portable toilet rentals they usually imagine fun outdoor summer events – corporate functions, weddings, block parties, festivals, concerts, and more! That’s why it might surprise you to discover that emergency portable toilet rentals are much more prevalent than you’d think!

Regardless of the season, homeowners and business owners can find themselves in an emergency situation that requires that they bring in portable toilets at a moment’s notice. That’s where we come in! Here are the most common emergencies that we deliver portable toilets and luxury restroom trailers for year-round:

Power Outages

Both winter and summer storms can leave you without a functional bathroom. While many businesses can close if they don’t have a generator to restore power in an outage, some don’t have any choice but to stay open. For these businesses, we can provide enough porta potties and hand sanitizer stations to keep employees and customers satisfied. When it comes to residential applications, we can have a restroom unit delivered to your location so that you don’t have to go elsewhere to use the bathroom.

Burst Pipes

One of the biggest problems that businesses and residential homes face in the winter is frozen pipes that burst. Obviously, when this happens the water needs to be shut off, which renders indoor bathrooms useless. This is where our luxury portable restrooms can be such a big help! Our luxury bathroom trailers are heated to allow for comfortable use even in the coldest months and their flushing toilets and running water will make you forget you’re using a portable restroom.

Flooded Bathrooms

Whether it’s due to a burst pipe, overflowing toilet, sewer back up, or any other cause, a flooded bathroom can feel like a nightmare. Wake up from this bad situation by renting a luxury portable restroom unit that will serve all the same functions as your residential or commercial bathroom! We even have restroom trailers that have showers to mimic the feel of a master bathroom.

Mold Remediation

A leak or flood in your home can lead to mold growth, requiring professional remediation. While mold is being removed and affected areas are being repaired and replaced, your bathroom won’t be usable. You can rent a luxury restroom trailer for a few days, weeks, or even months to suite your needs.

How Do Porta Potties Work Anyways?!

We were recently setting up for an event when a nice lady came over to us and started chatting. She was asking us how we got started in the business and which types of events we service, and then she leaned in and said, “So, how do portable toilets actually work?” We talked to her for a few minutes before getting back to the job at hand and as she was leaving she thanked us saying, “You know, I’ve always wondered about that!” That experience got us to thinking – maybe there are more people out there who’ve always wanted to know the very same thing and didn’t know who to ask. So, if you’ve ever wondered what life is like for a porta potty, here you go…

Each event we do is planned, in advance, down to the detail. The client will tell us about their upcoming event – what it is, when it is, how many people are expected, how long it will last, etc. Then, we use this information to advise the client on how many units he/she will need. Whether it’s a small event like a wedding or graduation party or a large event like a music festival, corporate function, or marathon, we can cater to the needs of each specific client. At this point the units are reserved for the client’s chosen date and time. (The summer months are our busiest, but we rent units year-round.)

Before a portable toilet or luxury restroom trailer arrives at your event, it’s been thoroughly cleaned and prepared for use. This includes pumping out the waste tank, sanitizing the whole interior, washing down the exterior, and re-stocking it with paper and hand sanitizer and/or soap.

At the event, attendees will use the toilets and the tanks inside will begin to fill up. The reason single-ply toilet paper is provided is to minimize waste so that tanks don’t fill too quickly. The solid waste that attendees leave behind is naturally broken down and the smell is minimized by the blue chemical solution stored down in the tanks. Depending on the event, sometimes the organizers have chosen to have extra capacity tanks installed, which can add 250 additional gallons of storage.

If the portable toilet that you’re using is an elite unit, it may also have a sink with running water and a flushable toilet feature. In much the same way that a portable handwashing station would work, these both draw on water held in storage tanks to offer these more premium features. When that tank is out of water, those amenities will no longer work.

Once the event is over, the cycle starts again! The unit is removed and then turned around for the next event on the calendar, which means that there’s no telling where the porta potty that you’re using may have traveled from earlier that week, month, or year. Our portable restrooms travel all over West Michigan, and our luxury portable toilets go all over Michigan and the surrounding states.
