Meet Our Most Popular Portable Toilet Units

One of the most common questions we hear from prospective customers is “What are your most popular units?” So, we’ve decided to spotlight the units that are in highest demand across Michigan year-round. Here are our top portable toilets:

Elite Portable Toilet Unit

The Elite unit is an upgraded version of the standard porta potty that you’re accustomed to seeing at public events, in parks, along trails, and on construction sites. Unlike regular porta johns that just have the basics (a toilet, urinal, and hand sanitizer dispenser), Elite units also boast premium features. A foot pedal flushes the toilet inside while a fresh water sink provides running water for handwashing. Additionally, a coat hook and shelves allow users to stow their belongings securely while doing their business.

“Shanty” 2-Stall Trailer

This trailer is one of our newest luxury restroom trailers and has been an instant hit for outdoor weddings and barn weddings. Its rustic charm combines old world styling with modern conveniences for the perfect mix of old and new. The 2-stall size makes it a lovely choice for smaller, more intimate weddings and functions.

Master Bath Trailer

Our Master Bath trailer is a simple, clean version of your home’s master bathroom… multiplied by three. Each of the three private stalls have a toilet, sink, and shower, allowing people the same conveniences of home out in nature. This unit is ideally suited for multi-day outdoor events where guests will need to get clean (music festivals, retreats, camping excursions, etc.). The Master Bath trailer unit can also be used for homeowners that are doing major renovations, which compromise their existing bathrooms.

ADA Compliant Trailer

People typically assume that the Hydra ADA trailer is only for public events where handicapped accessibility is required. However, this handicapped stall equipped trailer is a great addition to any family-friendly event because it also provides stroller access for families with young children. Its versatility makes it a popular choice for all sorts of events from weddings and black-tie events to sporting events, public festivals, and community gatherings.

All About Portable Toilet Rentals for Weddings

Looking to rent portable toilets for weddings? Great! You’ve come to the right place. This article will cover all the main points that you need to consider when renting wedding portable restrooms. We work with engaged couples, wedding planners, and outdoor wedding venue owners every season to help them create spectacular events, which means that we’ve been asked a lot of the questions that you’re probably trying to figure out many times before!

These are the top things you need to consider when renting portable toilets for your outdoor wedding ceremony or reception:

How They’ll Be Used

It might seem silly to say that you should figure out how a portable restroom will be used, but it’s actually a very important first step.

Obviously, people will need to use the restrooms to go to the bathroom, but is there any other way they’ll need to be used? Will everyone in the wedding party be getting ready off-site and then arriving picture-ready? Or will there be a need for wardrobe changes or hair and make-up touch ups on site? If so, you’ll want larger restrooms that can accommodate getting ready, preferably ones with mirrors and countertops for belongings. If this is the case, you should probably lean towards renting a luxury restroom trailer instead of regular portable toilet units. While Elite Unit portable toilets provide some of these same comforts, luxury restrooms are the preferred choice for weddings where the wedding party and/or other guests will be using them on-site for prepping.

What Kinds of Amenities You Want

Are you just looking for a no-frills bathroom solution, or do you want added amenities like flushing toilets and sinks with running water? If you’d like these added features, you have to choose either Elite Units or luxury portable restroom trailers to provide these types of amenities.

If you’re looking to mimic the kinds of amenities that your guests would have if your wedding venue was indoors, you’ll find that the luxury restrooms provide many of these same stylish touches – things like wooden cabinetry, recessed lighting, large mirrors, wide countertops, accent rugs, hanging art, and faux plant décor. We have portable restroom trailers ranging in size from 3-stall to 10-stall options to suit any size wedding or party.

How Many You’ll Need

If you plan on using standard porta potty units, we have a helpful chart to help you determine how many you’ll need for the size and duration of your event. If you’re interested in getting a restroom trailer, we can help you determine which one will fit your specific needs, budget, and event style. Larger trailers will have separate men’s and women’s sections (with private stalls inside both and urinals in the men’s section) that resemble traditional bathrooms whereas smaller trailers will have dedicated stalls that open to the outdoors directly. For most events, just one trailer of the right size will suffice, but for very large events or events across a wide area, multiple trailers may be used to reduce wait time and make the more convenient for guests to access.

Where They’ll Go

If you plan on having your event at an established outdoor wedding venue, they probably already have an area designated for portable toilet placement. However, if you’re having your event at a private residence or out in the woods, you’ll want to consult with us to determine where they’ll go to maximize convenience for your guests and deliverability for our staff. We can help you determine the right placement for your specific location.

Toilets of the Future – Crazy Features You’ll Never Believe Really Exist

These days everything is getting more technologically equipped – phones, cars, TVs, beds, you name it! Not to be left behind, some companies are equipping toilets with space-age, high-tech features that will blow you away! The result is a high-priced luxury toilet that’s not your average john. Here are some of the unbelievable features that you can find integrated into today’s most stunning toilets –

Everyone knows what a standard toilet looks like, but some toilet manufacturers are beginning to roll out wall-mounted designs that look sleek and save space to maximize room in smaller bathrooms. They pair well with floating bathroom vanities and vessel sinks to give an ultra-modern appearance to any bathroom.

Night Light

Hate turning on the light in the bathroom at night to do your business? Toilet night light options have remedied that issue entirely! Toilets are now starting to boast a variety of lighting options ranging from in-bowl lighting to projected lighting from the seat lid. Many even offer automatic on and off functionality to make your life even easier.

Motion-Activated Lids

While certainly not a necessity, motion-activated lids are probably still one of the most fun toilet innovations to this day. Simply waving a hand or foot near the toilet triggers the lid to raise so that you can do your business and then walking away signals the lid to close again. This functionality amuses kids and adults alike, as well as dogs. (Don’t ask us how we know that, we just do.)

Customizable Bidet

You can customize and save the angle and position of your seat in your car, so why not bring this same level of customization to toilets, right? Well, that’s the thought behind this innovative toilet feature, anyways. Some toilet/bidet combos now come equipped with customizable water jet options that you can program and save so that your toilet gets the job done to your exacting specifications.

Heated Seats

The ultimate in toilet comfort comes in the form of a heated toilet seat! Some toilets these days offer cozy comfort for people that are going to be there a while by warming up to keep your butt warm on those cold mornings and evenings. A new offering that we’ve heard about is a foot warmer option, which would probably eliminate the need to wear slippers!

Built-in Speakers

Speaking of getting comfortable, why bother playing music on your speakers or TV in another room when you can blast your tunes from your toilet?! Today’s most modern toilets can come enabled with Bluetooth speakers that stream music from your phone to keep you entertained while you’re on the throne. (Now, we’re sure you’re probably just going to use this futuristic feature to listen to educational podcasts and not blare your favorite guilty pleasures while you belt out lyrics, but either way this is an awesome addition! 😉)

Deodorizing & Self-Cleaning

Let’s face it, bathrooms get dirty! Keeping up with smells and messes is everyone’s least favorite part of their home bathroom, which is why some toilets are now being rolled out with self-cleaning features. Toilets with pre-installed charcoal filters minimize stinky smells, while toilets that spray a cleaner with each flush combat dirty bowls. A toilet that’s self-sufficient, who could ask for anything more?!

Health Reporting

We’ve heard a rumor that there’s a toilet out of Japan that can analyze your (ahem) waste matter to give you a health report. Apparently, it can determine whether you’re properly hydrated based on the concentration of your urine as well as report on the nutrition make-up of your stool. This information can be stored and compared over time to give you an accurate projection of your past and current health. The jury is still out on whether this is downright creepy or kind of awesome, but you can be sure of one thing – none of your house guests will want to use your bathroom if you have one of these!

15 Things You’ll Find in a Luxury Restroom Trailer… and 5 You Won’t

People ask us all the time what they can expect when renting luxury restrooms, and the answer is really two-fold. You’ll see a lot of surprising luxurious upgrades, but you won’t find those annoyances that typically accompany portable toilets. So, without further ado, here are 15 things you will find in luxury restroom trailers, and five things you won’t find:

What’s in a Luxury Portable Restroom?

  1. Climate-Controlled Interiors
  2. Running Hot/Cold Water
  3. Flushing Toilets
  4. Large Mirrors
  5. Spacious Countertops
  6. Wooden Cabinetry
  7. Accent Rugs
  8. Hanging Pictures
  9. Faux Flowers
  10. Recessed Interior Lighting
  11. Low-Level Exterior Lighting
  12. Showers
  13. Private Stalls and Urinals
  14. Standard Water Hook Up or On-board Water Holding Tank
  15. Large Waste Storage Tanks

Keep in mind that not every trailer unit will have all these features. So, if one particular feature is especially important to you, be sure to ask the portable toilet supplier that you’re using whether the trailer you’re renting has the features that you really need.

What Can You Avoid with Luxury Restroom Trailers?

    1. Gross Smells
    2. Dark Interiors
    3. A Mess from Previous Users
    4. Unpleasant Temperatures
    5. Long Lines

Tips for Having a Luxury Wedding on a Budget

Wedding costs are higher than ever, especially for luxury weddings. So, if you’re looking for the same elegance and prestige of a luxury wedding without the large expense, here are some tips for reducing the cost of your big day:

Choose an Outdoor Venue

Outdoor wedding venues are really popular these days – especially during spring and summer months. Having an outdoor wedding at a non-traditional venue is a great way to make your wedding unique and also save a lot of money. You can create the same luxury feel that you’d have at a professional wedding venue by having upscale catering and renting luxury restrooms to wow your guests while they’re outdoors. Seating guests under an elegant-looking tent will protect them from the elements and provide a cozy feel into the evening, which will make your event fun and memorable.

Mix in DIY Accents

You don’t have to buy all the elements for your wedding. To save some money, you can mix in some items that you’ve made yourself. Whether it’s the invitations, favors, or centerpieces, if you’re willing to get crafty, you can save on these accents without any of your guests being the wiser. You can also recruit relatives and friends to help you make things for the wedding to let them be a part of your special celebration.

Opt for Less Lavish Food

The catering bill can be one of your biggest wedding expenses. But instead of making your wedding feel cheap by forgoing the meal, you can just opt for less expensive menu items. For instance, instead of offering a beef carving station or individual filets, you can offer more affordable cuts of meat with great sauces and a wonderful presentation. You can also lean more heavily towards seasonal vegetables and pastas. When it comes to the iconic wedding cake, you can go with a smaller or less intricate cake to save money. Or, better yet, you can skip the wedding cake altogether in favor of more seasonal individual desserts like strawberry shortcakes. Rustic touches like these are very fashionable right now!

Scale Back the Professional Help

Before you start booking professionals for your wedding, consider which services you really need and which you can do without. You may feel pressured to use a wedding planner, but doing the planning yourself can be more fun and save you tons of money. When it comes to the big day, opting for a DJ or a pianist instead of a full live band can result in substantial savings as well.

Shorten the Reception

Most people leave before the end of the reception anyways, so shortening it by an hour or more probably won’t have much of an effect on your guests. You’ll save money on every professional service you’re using (caterers, the DJ, and photographers) as well as the venue rental by having a shorter reception and most people probably won’t even notice.

Will Your Outdoor Concert Draw a Large Crowd?

concert crowd
Spring is rapidly approaching, which means that outdoor summer concerts are right around the corner. If you’re a concert-goer, all you have to do is stock up on sunscreen and download the latest ticketing app to your smartphone. However, if you’re a concert planner, you have a lot of work ahead of you to make a great show. Planning an epic concert is no easy task, but if you have these four must-haves, it’s a surefire recipe for success:

Top Talent

Booking top talent is the most important part of putting on a great concert. Audience members will forgive a lot of other things, but having crummy opening acts or a stale lead band is a concert killer. Get top bands and you’re sure to have a solid show and keep attendees coming back season after season.

Food & Beverage

Not providing food and water for concert-goers during the hot summer months can lead to fatigue and heat stroke, which is reason enough to have food vending at your event. But on top of just meeting people’s physical needs, offering items for purchase gives people reason to stick around longer. This keeps crowds at your concert, increasing positive publicity and boosting your chances for having subsequent successful concerts.

Plentiful Sitting/Standing Room

People don’t like being crammed into venues for concerts, especially when it’s hot out. Provide enough space for people to stand or sit comfortably. If you’re going to allow people to bring in chairs, coolers, and umbrellas, put restrictions on sizes so that there’s enough room for everyone.

Enough Restrooms

Failing to provide enough restrooms for an outdoor concert can lead to people using the bathroom wherever they’d like, which is the last thing you want to encourage. Keep the location of your concert sanitary and the event dignified by having plenty of bathrooms for attendees. Talk to your portable toilet supplier to determine how many units you’ll need for your event, and then rent a few extra just in case.

If you’re planning a weekend or week long music festival, you may also want to provide shower trailers so that attendees can get cleaned up. These are especially popular for events where people are camping in conjunction with the festival. You have a lot of options when it comes to offering these types of amenities – you can price their rental cost into ticket prices and make them available to everyone, offer them as a part of an upgraded premium package, or have them available on a pay-per-use basis for attendees.

10 Ways to Save on Your Wedding Venue

Your wedding should be one of the most special events in your life, but that doesn’t mean it has to cost a fortune! The venue is one of the biggest wedding expenses you’ll incur, which means it provides an excellent opportunity to reduce the overall cost if you can make smart decisions. If you’re looking to have an amazing event on a budget, here are some great tips to help you save money when selecting a wedding venue:

  1. Don’t Get Married on Saturday
  2. Saturday is the most popular day of the week to get married, which means that prices are much higher on Saturdays. But if you get married on a Friday or Sunday instead, venues are typically about 50% less expensive. It might not be traditional, but it’ll save you a boatload of money. Plus, if your guests are mostly local, it really won’t be much of an inconvenience.

  3. Choose an All-in-One Venue
  4. It’s more expensive to get married at one location and then have your reception at another venue because you end up paying to use both. Instead, choose an all-in-one venue to save on rental fees. Guests typically prefer not having to travel between venues, so it’s really a win-win.

  5. Buy a Package
  6. Many venues offer complete packages where the wedding cake, bartending, catering, photography, and flowers are provided as part of the cost. Because these venues are using the same providers over and over, they’re able to negotiate the best rates, which means that it can be less expensive (not to mention less stressful) than finding individual vendors on your own. Price out the packages and then get rates on your own for comparison’s sake.

  7. Use a Non-Traditional Venue
  8. You don’t have to select a dedicated wedding venue for your big day. Think outside of the box when it comes to choosing your venue! Places like coffee shops, art museums, parks, and restaurants can often accommodate weddings and will typically offer better prices because they’re glad to have the high-volume exposure. Newly opened venues can often give you a price break as well because they want to attract the business.

  9. Pre-Pay
  10. It might seem a little scary, but if you can manage to pay in advance for your wedding, you’ll often get a price break for doing so. Inquire about what kind of discount you can get for pre-paying for part or all of your wedding.

  11. Scale Back the Guest List
  12. Obviously smaller wedding receptions are less expensive than larger ones (especially if you’re having a full sit-down meal). To save some money, you can make your wedding reception family-only and then have a separate unofficial party for your friends later. Alternatively, you can just cross everyone off the list that you’re inviting because you feel obligated to invite but don’t actually care about coming.

  13. Shorten the Reception
  14. Reducing the length of your reception by an hour or two will save you a lot of money on the venue rental and, also, the photographer, videographer, and DJ/band.

  15. Skip the Bar
  16. If your wedding venue will let you BYOB, that’s a great way to save money because venues add on a huge upcharge for drinks. If they won’t let you do so, opt for a cash bar instead of an open bar to cut costs. (This is an especially great option if your guests are lighter drinkers, because it means you won’t pay for something that you’re not actually using.) If this is out of the question, you can always have a limited bar and just offer beer and wine instead of spirits. A limited bar is often less expensive to have than a full bar.

  17. Book Well in Advance
  18. The further out you book your wedding, the less expensive it will be. As you get closer to the big day, your options become more limited, which means that you won’t be able to shop around as much as if you had planned in advance.

  19. Get Married Outdoors
  20. These tips are all great, but they all involve at least some measure of sacrifice. So, if you want to have the wedding of your dreams without having to get married on an off-peak day, or shorten the wedding reception, or pare down the guest list, having your wedding outside is your best bet! You can choose to have your event at an established outdoor wedding venue, or you can opt for an off-the-beaten path alternative. No matter where you choose to have it, you can always bring in a fancy tent, gourmet food, and luxury portable toilets to make guests feel like they’re at a well-appointed venue.

Toilets That Do What?! – The Most Surprising Features in Portable Restrooms

Every day our luxury portable toilets surprise people who are expecting the same old porta johns that they’ve seen a million times before. We asked around, and these are the most surprising features that our toilets boast:

  • Elegant Appearance
  • Our luxury restrooms are just that – luxurious! They include stylish décor like wooden cabinetry, accent rugs, faux flowers, and hanging pictures, as well as functional upgrades like large glass mirrors. The insides are so well-appointed that you’ll probably forget that you’re even in a portable bathroom.

  • Climate Controlled Interiors
  • Air conditioning and heat options are available in our luxury portable restrooms to provide comfortable use in all weather. This ensures that they can be used for events year-round day or night.

  • Flushing Toilets
  • The trademark of the standard porta potty is an open toilet filled with blue liquid where waste just sits until it’s pumped out. It’s sanitary, but it’s not always the most pleasant thing to see after other people have used them. Restroom trailers, on the other hand, have flushable toilets to make the whole experience of using them even more enjoyable.

  • Sinks with Running Water
  • Forget the typical hand sanitizer pumps – portable toilet trailers have sinks with running hot and cold water! People can wash their hands as they would in any normal bathroom with a comfortable water temperature and soap. The spacious counters that surround each sink provide plenty of room to rest your belongings while using the facilities and getting cleaned up.

  • Lighting
  • Luxury portable toilets have low level exterior lighting as well as interior lighting to make them functional in the dark. This means that your event doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down! The proper lighting makes them safe, clean, and convenient for people of all ages to use.

5 Ways Not Having Enough Bathrooms Will Ruin Your Event

What’s the worst thing that can happen at your event? Not having enough bathrooms!

We deal with corporate event planners, party planners, engaged couples, and tons of other people every year who are looking for portable restroom rentals for their upcoming events and we tell them all the same thing: you can’t have too many bathrooms! The reason for this is simple – skimping on the bathrooms for your event can ruin it even if everything else goes perfectly. Sometimes people are skeptical and think that we’re just trying to sell them on getting more units or trailers than they’ll actually need, but that’s not the case at all. Don’t believe us? Here are 5 ways that not having enough restrooms can ruin the success of your event now and in the future:

  1. Unsatisfied Attendees
  2. A great way to frustrate people at your event is to make them wait in long lines. But while people tend to wait in lines for food, beverages, and merchandise without much complaining, bathroom lines always make people angry because having to hold it when you really need to use the facilities isn’t comfortable.

A lot of people head for the bathrooms when they first arrive at an event and/or just before leaving, which means that long bathroom lines may be the first and/or last thing that they experience at your event. Don’t start off your event on the wrong foot by frustrating people when they first get there, and don’t end your event by having a bad experience be the last thing that event attendees remember. Instead, rent enough units from your local portable toilet supplier to accommodate all your guests comfortably and ensure that they’re clean and well-maintained.

  3. Reduced Length of Visits
  4. People won’t stay at your event for as long if they have to leave to use the bathroom. If you’re hosting an event where you want people to stick around to make it successful (to make purchases, participate in activities, create a packed vibe, etc.), this can be a real killer. Get attendees to stay for the duration of your event by providing for their basic needs (bathrooms, food, shade, places to sit, etc.) to make them comfortable.

  5. Fewer Families
  6. Families and bathrooms go together like peanut butter and jelly – they’re meant to be. Parents instinctively look for larger bathrooms to accommodate an adult and multiple children (or a child in a stroller) all at once to make bathroom trips easier. Not having handicapped stall-sized bathrooms or enough bathrooms to get people in and out quickly is a big turn off for parents and other caregivers. If you don’t have enough bathrooms, the word will spread quickly and it’ll cause families to stay away because people with children don’t want to hear their kids whine and cry when they must wait in long bathroom lines (or worse yet, clean up after accidents occur).

  7. Unsanitary Conditions
  8. If you’re serving food at your event, having enough bathrooms is an absolute must-have! Aside from just the inconvenience of having to wait to use the restroom, trying to have too many people use too few toilets can cause the units to run out of hand sanitizer/soap. The last thing you want is people to use the bathrooms and then be handling and consuming food without an adequate way to wash their hands and kill germs. This makes a foodborne illness outbreak more likely, which can make people seriously sick and get your public event shut down.

  9. Decreased Long-Term Attendance
  10. Recurring annual or seasonal events hinge on providing a good experience for attendees so that they’ll want to return in the future. We already covered how not having enough portable toilets can irritate attendees and cause them to cut their time at your event short, but the long-term implication is that they may not return in the future either. Worse yet, they may share their bad experience with other people who are interested in your event and dissuade them from wanting to go the next time you put it on.

The 4 Things We Love Most About Our Job

Here at Kerkstra we’re thankful to have a job that we really love! Most people probably don’t think that there’s much to love about portable restrooms and septic tanks, but there are a lot of things we love about doing what we do. Here are out top favorite things about being a portable restroom supplier in Michigan:

  1. Meeting New People and Seeing New Things
  2. Through our luxury restrooms and porta potty business we get to be a part of some really special events. Our equipment has been at more weddings than we can count, not to mention music festivals, parades, motorcycle gatherings, community fundraisers, corporate functions, marathons, black tie events, private block parties, tailgates, and basically anything else that you can name. Each of those events requires set up beforehand and clean up afterwards, which gives us a chance to meet a lot of great people. No two events are the same either, which means that we’re constantly being surprised by new types of events and cool things that we see incorporated into the same events that we do year after year.

  3. Being A Part of Your Special Event
  4. Just like any other event vendor (caterers, photographers, transportation companies, etc.) hiring us for your event makes us a part of it. We take this very seriously because at Kerkstra we’re kind of like one big family, so when you invite our family to be a part of your special event, we’re honored. We look at each event that we do and know that we’re making it the best it can possibly be with our top of the line equipment. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that our restrooms make awesome events possible all across the state!

  5. Traveling Across Michigan
  6. Speaking of going across the state, we get to travel in and around Michigan A LOT! Our trailers go to a lot of events in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and countless small cities and towns up north along the lakeshore. Spending as much time on the road as we do gives us the opportunity to see Michigan’s beauty in all four seasons! Some of our favorite places to bring portable restrooms to are Holland, Traverse City, and Charlevoix (just to name a few).

  7. Getting Outdoors
  8. The number one reason why people need portable toilets is because they’re having an outdoor event, which means that we spend a lot of time outdoors. Okay, this might not be the absolute best part of our job in the middle of winter, but it’s great the rest of the year! Having a job that lets you travel and feel the sunshine on your face while working is something that a lot of people don’t get the privilege of doing, which makes us thankful for the opportunity.
