Do You Really Need Portable Bathrooms?

As a general rule, if you think you may need portable restrooms, you probably do! Whether you’re hosting a special event or planning a function, bathrooms are a must-have.

That’s not to say that you should only rent portable bathrooms if the location you’re using doesn’t have any bathrooms at all though! We frequently rent porta potties and luxury restroom trailers for events where there are established bathrooms already in place. In these cases, rentals are meant to supplement or replace the existing bathrooms because they’ve fallen short of expectations for one reason or another.

These are the top cases for when you absolutely need portable bathrooms:

Number

If there aren’t enough bathrooms for your size event, adding to the available number with some rented units is a great way to ensure that attendees can enjoy themselves instead of having to wait in long lines. Shorter wait times also entice more families to attend and guests to stick around longer instead of leaving early.

Remember, you can never have too many restrooms. No one is never going to fault you for providing extra options, but they will certainly voice their disappointment if there aren’t enough bathrooms to go around.

Location

If bathrooms are inconveniently located or spaced too far apart, bringing in rented bathrooms gives event attendees more convenient options. Ensuring that you have well-placed bathrooms increases guest satisfaction by providing guests with more time to enjoy the main event.

Depending on the nature of your event, you may also want to provide various restroom tiers in different locations for different groups to enjoy. For instance, we often provide portable restroom solutions for 5K and 10K races as well as half and full-marathons. In these cases, we typically set up a bank of porta johns for spectators to use, as well as luxury portable restroom trailers for the athletes to change inside after the competition. Their paid race entry entitles them to use these more premium restrooms (as well as other amenities from the race organizers).

Niceness

If the available bathrooms aren’t very nice, people will often forgo using them and just leave your event early so that they can do their business elsewhere. Additionally, if the available bathrooms don’t have much-needed amenities (climate-controlled interiors, exterior lighting, running water, etc.) attendees may not use them while at your event or simply avoid your event altogether.

Meet Our Most Popular Portable Toilet Units

One of the most common questions we hear from prospective customers is “What are your most popular units?” So, we’ve decided to spotlight the units that are in highest demand across Michigan year-round. Here are our top portable toilets:

Elite Portable Toilet Unit

The Elite unit is an upgraded version of the standard porta potty that you’re accustomed to seeing at public events, in parks, along trails, and on construction sites. Unlike regular porta johns that just have the basics (a toilet, urinal, and hand sanitizer dispenser), Elite units also boast premium features. A foot pedal flushes the toilet inside while a fresh water sink provides running water for handwashing. Additionally, a coat hook and shelves allow users to stow their belongings securely while doing their business.

“Shanty” 2-Stall Trailer

This trailer is one of our newest luxury restroom trailers and has been an instant hit for outdoor weddings and barn weddings. Its rustic charm combines old world styling with modern conveniences for the perfect mix of old and new. The 2-stall size makes it a lovely choice for smaller, more intimate weddings and functions.

Master Bath Trailer

Our Master Bath trailer is a simple, clean version of your home’s master bathroom… multiplied by three. Each of the three private stalls have a toilet, sink, and shower, allowing people the same conveniences of home out in nature. This unit is ideally suited for multi-day outdoor events where guests will need to get clean (music festivals, retreats, camping excursions, etc.). The Master Bath trailer unit can also be used for homeowners that are doing major renovations, which compromise their existing bathrooms.

ADA Compliant Trailer

People typically assume that the Hydra ADA trailer is only for public events where handicapped accessibility is required. However, this handicapped stall equipped trailer is a great addition to any family-friendly event because it also provides stroller access for families with young children. Its versatility makes it a popular choice for all sorts of events from weddings and black-tie events to sporting events, public festivals, and community gatherings.

GAP and Our Farms

Want to know what’s keeping the food that our farmers grow safe for your family? One of the main initiatives is called GAP, and it stands for Good Agricultural Practices. Find out more and learn about what Kerkstra is doing to help with this program!

The Details

GAP is a voluntary agricultural program aimed at minimizing the risk of contamination to fruit/vegetables by food growers and packers. While GAP includes farm-wide protocols, some states have practices that are crop-specific as well to supplement those broader regulations.

Protecting our Communities

Foodborne illnesses are bad for everyone involved! Consumers get sick, farmers face reduced demand after an outbreak, and grocery stores suffer from wavering confidence in available products. GAP was implemented to keep people safe and support the agricultural industry as a whole. But GAP policies don’t just provide for safe consumption, they also aim to improve the use of resources on farms, ensure crop quality, and improve working conditions for pickers.

The main idea behind GAP is to prevent outbreak before it happens so that costly contamination removal isn’t necessary down the line.

How it Affects Farms

Getting pickers and other produce handlers to wash their hands regularly (especially after eating and using the restroom) is the first step in achieving GAP compliance. GAP regulations lay out specific protocols around employee sanitation and employer documentation that must be followed to ensure compliance. Kerkstra services farms with GAP compliant portable restrooms to help lay the foundation for this important program.

The Difference Between Portable Toilets and Restroom Trailers

If you need to rent portable toilets for an event, you’re likely doing research into which types of restrooms you’ll need and how many you should get. We know that comparing the offerings from various portable restroom suppliers can get confusing! You have to evaluate the types portable toilet options that they provide, ask about booking schedules, determine service areas, and compare prices. So, if your head is spinning with questions about portable toilet units, we’re here to help!

Luxury portable restroom trailers and porta johns are very different bathroom options. A restroom trailer is pulled behind a truck and delivered to your event before having the finishing touches added to wow users. Depending on the unit, it’s usually either silver or white and it has an upscale appearance from the outside. A porta potty, on the other hand, is loaded onto a trailer with a bunch of other units and then delivered to your event stocked and ready to go before being placed in a row to create a bank of portable toilets or strategically scattered around your event if it’s over a wide area.

Those are the basic differences on the surface, but the biggest differences between the two styles of bathrooms are on the inside. These are the fundamental differences that you can expect between luxury portable toilet trailers and porta potties:

Uses

It might sound silly to discuss the “uses” for portable toilets because, after all, they’re mostly used for doing your business. However, there really is a difference in how restroom trailers are used versus how portable toilets are used.

Portable toilets are simply designed for going to the bathroom – basic units have a toilet and urinal as well as a hand sanitizer pump installed on the wall. Elite units will also have the added convenience of a shelf, coat hook, and mirror as well as upgraded functionality like a mini sink and toilet that flushes with a foot pump. However, many local portable toilet suppliers don’t carry these models. Instead, they just stick to renting the standard porta john units.

Portable restroom trailers also provide users with a convenient and comfortable place to use the bathroom, but they have other uses as well. They’re a great substitute for cabanas at events where people might have to change their clothes (or their kids’ clothes), making them great for weddings, campgrounds, sports tournaments, the lakeside, weekend-long music festivals, and the like. They’re also more spacious and tend to stay cleaner after a lot of use than their porta potty counterparts, which makes them a better choice for diaper changes (although they don’t have wall-mounted changing tables with straps). Some also have showers, making them more like the bathroom in your home. This versatility is why so many customers choose to rent restroom trailers instead of (or in addition to) porta potties.

Amenities

When it comes to added amenities, you just can’t beat luxury restrooms! They boast wooden cabinetry, large mirrors, wide countertops, recessed interior lighting, low-level exterior lighting, accent rugs, hanging wall art, faux flowers, and much more. And these are just the aesthetic benefits! They also have running hot/cold water, are climate controlled, and use flushing toilets, making them a true substitute for the well-equipped restrooms that you would find inside of upscale locations like hotels, wedding venues, and restaurants.

Layouts

Porta potties are a one-size-fits-all restroom solution. They’re all laid out the same way, with only minor differences in size, for ADA-compliant portable toilets, and additional features, for Elite units. When you walk in the toilet is directly in front of you and the urinal is to the left.

Restroom trailers, however, provide different layout configurations depending on how many stalls they contain. Two and three-stall trailers have doors to the outside for each stall, making them incredibly private. While the stalls are typically labeled as either men’s or women’s on the door, they can be customized for your specific needs (such as converting a three-stall trailer from a men’s/women’s/women’s designation to a men’s/women’s/unisex configuration). Once you increase trailer size to a six-stall, eight-stall, or ten-stall version, the trailers will have a single entrance for men and a single entrance for women that will then contain individual stalls (and in the case of the men’s side, urinals as well) and shared sinks within each gender’s side. Get more information on specific layouts.

All About Portable Toilet Rentals for Weddings

Looking to rent portable toilets for weddings? Great! You’ve come to the right place. This article will cover all the main points that you need to consider when renting wedding portable restrooms. We work with engaged couples, wedding planners, and outdoor wedding venue owners every season to help them create spectacular events, which means that we’ve been asked a lot of the questions that you’re probably trying to figure out many times before!

These are the top things you need to consider when renting portable toilets for your outdoor wedding ceremony or reception:

How They’ll Be Used

It might seem silly to say that you should figure out how a portable restroom will be used, but it’s actually a very important first step.

Obviously, people will need to use the restrooms to go to the bathroom, but is there any other way they’ll need to be used? Will everyone in the wedding party be getting ready off-site and then arriving picture-ready? Or will there be a need for wardrobe changes or hair and make-up touch ups on site? If so, you’ll want larger restrooms that can accommodate getting ready, preferably ones with mirrors and countertops for belongings. If this is the case, you should probably lean towards renting a luxury restroom trailer instead of regular portable toilet units. While Elite Unit portable toilets provide some of these same comforts, luxury restrooms are the preferred choice for weddings where the wedding party and/or other guests will be using them on-site for prepping.

What Kinds of Amenities You Want

Are you just looking for a no-frills bathroom solution, or do you want added amenities like flushing toilets and sinks with running water? If you’d like these added features, you have to choose either Elite Units or luxury portable restroom trailers to provide these types of amenities.

If you’re looking to mimic the kinds of amenities that your guests would have if your wedding venue was indoors, you’ll find that the luxury restrooms provide many of these same stylish touches – things like wooden cabinetry, recessed lighting, large mirrors, wide countertops, accent rugs, hanging art, and faux plant décor. We have portable restroom trailers ranging in size from 3-stall to 10-stall options to suit any size wedding or party.

How Many You’ll Need

If you plan on using standard porta potty units, we have a helpful chart to help you determine how many you’ll need for the size and duration of your event. If you’re interested in getting a restroom trailer, we can help you determine which one will fit your specific needs, budget, and event style. Larger trailers will have separate men’s and women’s sections (with private stalls inside both and urinals in the men’s section) that resemble traditional bathrooms whereas smaller trailers will have dedicated stalls that open to the outdoors directly. For most events, just one trailer of the right size will suffice, but for very large events or events across a wide area, multiple trailers may be used to reduce wait time and make the more convenient for guests to access.

Where They’ll Go

If you plan on having your event at an established outdoor wedding venue, they probably already have an area designated for portable toilet placement. However, if you’re having your event at a private residence or out in the woods, you’ll want to consult with us to determine where they’ll go to maximize convenience for your guests and deliverability for our staff. We can help you determine the right placement for your specific location.

The Top 10 Ways to Ensure Safety on the Job Site

Job site safety is the most important topic for foremen and upper management to consider when planning contract work because it touches so many elements of the job. Injury and illness and increase costs and time while reducing worker morale and efficiency, which means that proper safety protocols ensure that workers are protected and jobs are completed successfully. That’s why worker safety is such a hot topic and so many companies and organizations invest resources into improving safety on the job. Here are some of the most effective ways to ensure job site safety:

  • Require PPE

Every job will have its own needs around personal protective equipment (PPE). Ensure that employees are fully outfitted with foot protection, hi-visibility clothing, hard hats, hearing protection, and any other safety wear that’s appropriate for the job being done. With safety footwear, be sure that all employees have boots or shoes that meet the demands of the job to avoid a catastrophic incident.

  • Post Regulations and Requirements

Workers can’t follow safety regulations if they don’t know what they are, which is why many industries require that safety guidelines be posted publicly for employees to read. Ensure compliance by readily displaying anything that your workers need to read on the job site.

  • Encourage Employees to Ask Questions

New employees and younger workers may not have the same levels of experience that older employees do, which means that it’s very important to create a culture where it’s okay to ask questions. Make sure that “green” employees feel comfortable asking for help or confirming before engaging in a task.

  • Implement Regular Safety Training

Obviously, new employees need to be trained, but even your more experienced employees can benefit from ongoing training. Incorporate training on the newest methods into the job regularly to keep employees up-to-date on recent industry changes and narrow the knowledge gap.

  • Utilize a Chain of Command

Make it clear who’s in charge on the job site so that employees know who to go to if they’re experiencing an issue. This is important for maintaining order (especially with large work crews) and centralizing safety concerns and complaints.

  • Involve Employees in New Initiatives

The best way to get employees on board with safety measures is to include them. Ask for input when safety measures are being updated and implement a feedback loop to strive for continuous improvement.

  • Reward Safe Behavior

Incentivizing safe behavior is a good way to keep employees safe on the job. Some companies take a broader “It’s been X days since an incident” approach while others reward employees individually with bonuses/perks when they’re observed following safety procedures. No matter how you choose to structure it, providing incentives for safe behavior is likely to keep employees honest with conduct even when they’re not being observed.

  • Communicate a Way to Report Violations

Whether it’s an anonymous whistleblower program, or a way to bring violations to managers without retaliation, employees need to know that they’re safe to report what they see if there’s something foul going on.

  • Take the Weather into Account

Outdoor job sites have the added stress of needing to respond to weather conditions. Always have regulations in place (regarding temperature and other conditions) around when workers should and shouldn’t be working. Keep workers sidelined when there’s lightning in the area or when temperatures are too cold or hot for work to be done safely and effectively. If you choose to have employees working in temperature extremes, be sure to provide plenty of water and breaks in hot temps and heaters in cold temps.

  • Provide On-Site Restrooms

It’s easy to forget about the danger posed by germs when you’re worried about dangers around heavy machinery and other obvious hazards, but that doesn’t make them any less serious. An outbreak of a stomach virus or other contagious disease can cripple your job site the same way a recordable accident can. If workers are out sick, you can fall behind schedule and risk burning out the rest of the workers who must make up the slack. This is why it’s so critical to have on-site restrooms with sinks and/or hand sanitizer dispensers. Giving workers a convenient place to go to the bathroom and clean up substantially reduces the likelihood of a contagious disease spreading. Without the proper facilities, employees can’t keep hands clean, which can spell disaster for your contract work (especially during cold and flu season). Using a reliable portable toilet supplier will ensure that you’re providing facilities that are regularly cleaned out and restocked for maximum hygiene.

How to Host an Unforgettable Customer Appreciation Event

A well-executed customer appreciation event can turn existing customers into passionate advocates and bring in increased business through personal referrals. But without the right planning, your event can fall flat. Don’t let your event be a lame attempt at appreciation, or you’ll just end up wasting money and casting your brand in a bad light. Instead, make the most of your event by leveraging it as a true marketing effort. Here are 10 tips for hosting an unforgettable customer appreciation event:

Pick the Right Day/Time

Consider your typical customers and what would work best for their schedules. This will help you determine whether you should plan an event on a week day or weekend and what time it should be. If you want to attract a lot of families, you’ll most likely want to have your event mid-day on the weekend.

Involve Customers

Ask your most loyal customers what they want to see included at the event and then incorporate their suggestions where possible. Then be sure to invite these contributors in a way that makes them feel special to ensure that they’ll be in attendance. You can even extend additional perks to your most valuable customers by giving them special gifts for attending or extending certain perks to them like closer parking.

Get All Employees on Board

To represent your company effectively, you should encourage as many employees as possible to attend your event. They can staff various areas of your event and make themselves available in case customers have any questions. You don’t want to give the impression that your employees really don’t care about customers by having your event understaffed.

Make It Family-Friendly

Unless you’re planning an adults-only event, you should assume that families will be attending as well, which means you need to plan activities for kids. Give kids lots of choices to get them excited and keep them busy. You can also set up a play and eat area for kids to make them feel like there’s something special just for them. Parents are happy when their kids are happy, which means that catering to kids’ preferences will make your event stick in parents’ minds.

Provide Food

Providing food encourages people to stay longer at events and it also increases their satisfaction. Remember, if you’re offering kids activities, you should also provide kid-friendly food to make sure that they’ll have options that appeal to them. Great food is one way to make your event really memorable and keep people coming back for future events at your company in years to come.

Consider Accessibility Challenges

Be sure to have handicapped accessible portable restrooms and other adaptations for people with decreased mobility so that everyone can enjoy your event regardless of ability.

Advertise Locally

Get the word out about your event in the local community in a variety of mediums to maximize exposure. Advertise at your location to customers coming in, send out emails to subscribers, announce the event in the local newspaper and on the TV and radio. Cover all your bases to ensure a good turn out once you have the details figured out. Be sure to let the community know what to expect – touting food, entertainment, and the other exciting features you have planned.

Give Back

An appreciation event is an opportunity to give back to the people who have given you their business. It’s a good idea to hand out gifts and offer discounts on future purchases to show that you want to share some of what you have with the people who have helped your business succeed.

Follow Up with Attendees

After the event follow up with people who attended. Get email addresses and phone numbers of attendees so that you can sell to them again in the future. Without taking this step, your event will just be a fun party instead of a sound business investment.

Keep Track of Important Data

Get data that you’ll need to plan future events. Keep track of how many people attended, what time they arrived, how much they ate, which events were the most popular, what worked well and what was a struggle to run, etc. This will all help you to throw an even better event next year.

Renting Portable Toilets 101

toilet sign
Need to rent portable toilets for your upcoming event or function? Here’s everything you need to know in one quick guide:

Book in Advance

There’s nothing worse than planning an event and then finding out at the last minute that you forgot to secure a vendor and now you don’t have any decent options left because they’re all booked up. Remember, there’s no such thing as planning too far in advance! So as soon as you have a few possible dates selected, call your preferred portable toilet supplier right away to see what kind of inventory they have for each of your available dates. This will help you narrow down a date and get on their calendar so that you have one of the most important elements squared away.

Use a Local Company

Here’s a little secret that no one tells you – using a local portable toilet company is always cheaper than using a big name national company. The reason for this is because the national companies simply take reservations for events and then contract with local companies to supply the portable toilets for them. This means that you’re paying for a middle man instead of just going to the supplier directly, which drives up the cost. Save yourself the money and just choose a local company to start with!

Get Enough

The biggest mistake you can make when renting portable toilets is not getting enough. Ensure that your guests won’t have to wait in line too long by getting enough units. If you need help deciding how many porta potties to rent, check out our planning chart.

Understand the Cost

Some portable restroom suppliers just charge by the unit, while others add-on a trip charge depending on how far away the units need to be delivered. If you’re having a multi-day event, you may also be billed for having the units pumped out once they fill up mid-event. Understand ahead of time what you’ll be billed for and what the total cost will be so that you can plan appropriately.
