Quick Fixes for those Winter Wedding Woes

Winter weddings have a look and feel that just can’t be matched in any other season. However, sometimes the winter weather can make having a perfect day difficult! The last thing you want is to be scrambling on your special day to overcome any obstacles that arise, which is why it’s important to plan for anything that could go wrong. These are the most common winter wedding woes and some quick fixes to help you avoid disaster:

Temperatures Plunge

If you’re going to have your wedding outdoors (or in an unheated venue), you better plan to have heaters and covered areas for guests in case it gets colder than expected! The last thing you want is for your guests to be freezing and your wedding party to be huddled under jackets and blankets. Obviously, you don’t want to pay for items that you won’t end up using, but like the old saying goes “If you have it, then you won’t need it.” Hedge your bets by renting or buying everything that you’ll need to keep guests comfortable.

Venue is Unavailable

While booking your venue in the summer or autumn it might seem unthinkable that it could suddenly be unavailable on your wedding day, however this could happen if there’s a power outage or burst pipe. Ask your wedding venue in advance what kinds of contingency plans they have in place in case bad weather affects your plans. If they don’t have a backup plan, you should create one of your own! Look at what else is around that might be able to host your wedding ceremony and reception, and don’t limit yourself to traditional wedding venues like hotels and museums. In fact, your backup plan may be to bring the winter weather into your event by taking it outside! Consider having contact information for heated party tent and luxury restrooms rentals saved in case you need them at the last minute.

Weather Causes Travel Issues

Guests that are flying or driving in may have their travel plans canceled or changed due to the weather. Figure out how you’ll get the wedding party and your most important guests to the wedding even in the worst weather. Host guests that need to come into town early at your own home or have a bank of hotel rooms reserved for them to use. If you have a lot of guests coming from one location, you could always opt to charter a van or bus to bring them all together so that they don’t have to drive themselves in bad weather.

Photo Ops are Ruined

Plan to have a variety of different locations for photos in case one or more is unavailable. This is especially important if you plan to have photos taken outdoors because ice, snow, rain, or other seasonal vulnerabilities may put your dream photos in jeopardy. If you really have your heart set on having pictures taken in a certain location, you can choose to have them taken on a different day than the wedding if everyone’s formalwear is still available.

How Do Porta Potties Work Anyways?!

We were recently setting up for an event when a nice lady came over to us and started chatting. She was asking us how we got started in the business and which types of events we service, and then she leaned in and said, “So, how do portable toilets actually work?” We talked to her for a few minutes before getting back to the job at hand and as she was leaving she thanked us saying, “You know, I’ve always wondered about that!” That experience got us to thinking – maybe there are more people out there who’ve always wanted to know the very same thing and didn’t know who to ask. So, if you’ve ever wondered what life is like for a porta potty, here you go…

Each event we do is planned, in advance, down to the detail. The client will tell us about their upcoming event – what it is, when it is, how many people are expected, how long it will last, etc. Then, we use this information to advise the client on how many units he/she will need. Whether it’s a small event like a wedding or graduation party or a large event like a music festival, corporate function, or marathon, we can cater to the needs of each specific client. At this point the units are reserved for the client’s chosen date and time. (The summer months are our busiest, but we rent units year-round.)

Before a portable toilet or luxury restroom trailer arrives at your event, it’s been thoroughly cleaned and prepared for use. This includes pumping out the waste tank, sanitizing the whole interior, washing down the exterior, and re-stocking it with paper and hand sanitizer and/or soap.

At the event, attendees will use the toilets and the tanks inside will begin to fill up. The reason single-ply toilet paper is provided is to minimize waste so that tanks don’t fill too quickly. The solid waste that attendees leave behind is naturally broken down and the smell is minimized by the blue chemical solution stored down in the tanks. Depending on the event, sometimes the organizers have chosen to have extra capacity tanks installed, which can add 250 additional gallons of storage.

If the portable toilet that you’re using is an elite unit, it may also have a sink with running water and a flushable toilet feature. In much the same way that a portable handwashing station would work, these both draw on water held in storage tanks to offer these more premium features. When that tank is out of water, those amenities will no longer work.

Once the event is over, the cycle starts again! The unit is removed and then turned around for the next event on the calendar, which means that there’s no telling where the porta potty that you’re using may have traveled from earlier that week, month, or year. Our portable restrooms travel all over West Michigan, and our luxury portable toilets go all over Michigan and the surrounding states.

Top Luxury Restroom Trailers Compared

Here at Kerkstra we get lots of interest in our luxury portable toilets. Event organizers and wedding planners call us all the time asking for more information about our bathroom trailers. They typically want advice about which unit will be right for their upcoming event and we often get into a discussion about how one trailer compares to another. So, we decided to put some of our best tips here on the blog to help you figure out which trailer or trailers you should rent as well!

Privacy

If privacy is important to you, the Embassy 2 Stall, Elite 3 Stall, Hydra ADA +2 Stall, and Master Bath 3 Stall all have individual private stalls. This is typically most important at events where people may need to get changed or get ready for an event in the bathroom. These completely private stalls have their own door to the outside, allowing for easy access for guests. Our other trailers have individual stalls within the dedicated men’s and women’s sections of the trailer. For more detailed information on layouts, please visit the event trailers section of our website.

Urinals

Urinals are a handy option for events where there will be a large number of male attendees because they move men through the process of using the restroom faster than if they had to wait for a regular stall. Many men also prefer using urinals, which causes our luxury portable restrooms that have them to be even more popular than their non-urinal counterparts. Luckily, most our luxury restrooms come equipped with urinals! The Embassy 2 Stall and Elite 3 Stall have urinals in the dedicated private stalls, and the Chalet 6 Stall and Fortress 10 Stall include banks of 2-3 urinals on the wall outside of the private stalls.

Looks

While all our luxury portable restrooms look high-end, we find that our clients typically prefer the dark wood finishes of the Embassy 2 Stall and Fortress 10 Stall trailers. Like the other trailers in our lineup, they have pleasant lighting, large mirrors, and decorative accents; however, they also feature a signature mahogany colored wood to make them even more distinct.

Best Value

Looking for a great deal? The Elite 3 Stall has a 400-gallon waste holding tank, which means that it can service a maximum of 350 attendees for an 8-10 hour event. This capacity makes it the best value for its size.

Size

For large events, you’ll need a large trailer to keep up with demand. Having a trailer that’s too small is the worst thing you can do because it will result in long lines and dissatisfied attendees. The Chalet 6 Stall and Fortress 10 Stall are our workhorses – servicing 500-1000 attendees for a typical 8-10 hour event. Keep in mind, you can also rent multiple trailers for especially large events and then have them stationed at various locations to make it convenient for attendees to find a restroom near their location no matter where they are!

Showers

If you need a portable shower trailer, our Master Bath 3 Stall will fit the bill. It has three dedicated private stalls that each include a toilet, shower, and sink. Think of it as your home master bathroom times three! The stylish look and functional layout makes it a great choice for camping trips, home renovations, and sporting events.

Accessibility

Our Hydra ADA +2 Stall trailer has a dedicated private men’s stall, women’s stall, and unisex handicapped accessible stall. A wheelchair ramp makes it easy for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers to maneuver to and from the handicapped stall. This unit is perfect for any event where you need accessibility and/or family-friendly options.

Is Your Event Missing These Crucial Restroom Add-Ons?

If you’re planning an event, you’ve probably finalized a million little details related to food vending, parking, staff, check-in/ticketing, and restrooms. With so many pieces to pull together to make your event great, you’re probably assuming you’ve addressed everything that you could possible end up needing. But if you’ve ignored these important restroom add-ons, you still have some more planning to do!

Hand Washing Stations

Portable toilet units come with hand sanitizer pumps mounted on the wall for quick sanitization, but many event attendees want to wash their hands after using the restroom or eating. This is where portable hand washing stations with soap and running water are helpful! These stations make it easy for guests to get themselves and their children or pets clean at an event, which helps keep everyone happy. As an added bonus, they also help lines to move much faster (or prevent them from building up at all) because after people use the bathroom they’re more likely to exit to go wash their hands rather than spending time in the unit pumping out some hand sanitizer and rubbing it on their hands. This might not seem like a bigtime saver, but when you have a large crowd, it adds up.

Hand Sanitizer Stations

Portable hand sanitizer stations help keep your event hygienic and your attendees healthy. These are especially popular for outdoor events where there will be food preparation, serving, and consumption because they are OSHA approved. Positioning these stations around the event will give people plenty of access so that everyone can stay sanitary and enjoy themselves. The last thing you want is for people to get sick because of your event.

Additionally, having hand sanitizer dispensers located separately from the restrooms means that people won’t have to wait in the bathroom line to get their hands clean. Again, this makes for shorter lines and more satisfied guests.

Handicapped Restrooms

ADA compliant portable restrooms are something that every event needs. These provide a handicapped accessible bathroom option for people in wheelchairs, parents with strollers, and anyone with compromised mobility. Their ground level accessibility makes them a great solution for outdoor events on both paved and unpaved surfaces.

Don’t worry! It’s easy to rent restrooms and accessories from a local portable toilet supplier like Kerkstra no matter when your event is or how big it will be. Just give us a call today at 888-320-9992. We’d be happy to discuss your options to help your event go off without a hitch!
