Portable Toilet Myths and Misconceptions

As porta-potty experts, we know that portable toilet myths run rampant! If you ask anyone what they think about portable toilets, we are willing to bet it isn’t positive. Most people (us included!) have had a portable restroom experience they would rather forget. These past experiences color perceptions and have led to many porta-potty myths and misconceptions. At Kerkstra, we are here to set the record straight! Listed below are the most common portable toilet myths we’ve heard over the years.

Myth 1: Porta-Potties Are Not Clean

Dirty porta-potties are usually the result of poor maintenance or overuse. At Kerkstra, we work diligently to change this narrative. Our team always delivers clean portable toilet units in proper working order. Then, we set up a service maintenance schedule with each client. During servicing, our technicians:

  • Remove trash and debris
  • Wash and sanitize all walls, the urinal, the toilet seat, and the floor
  • Drain the holding tank
  • Add fresh water and deodorant solution to the tank
  • Replace deodorizer disks and replenish supplies, such as sanitizer or toilet paper
  • Complete or schedule any repairs

Myth 2: Porta-Potties Are Ugly

We aren’t here to argue about the aesthetics of standard porta-potties. Those units prioritize functionality over appearance! Portable restrooms, however, can be more than a standalone unit. Clients can add handwashing stations, and luxury options are also available! Luxury restroom trailers typically feature wooden cabinetry, wide mirrors, recessed lighting, exterior lighting, and accessories like wall art and accent rugs.

Myth 3: Porta-Potties Are Smelly & Gross

Nothing is worse than a smelly potty! Our team works diligently to ensure our units are appropriately stocked with deodorizing disks and fresh water in holding tanks. Our Luxury options feature flushing toilets – just like home!

Myth 4: There Are No Places To Wash Your Hands

Not being able to wash your hands after using the restroom used to be a concern with porta-potties, but these days, there are tons of ways to keep your event sanitary. Standard units come with hand sanitizer pumps mounted on the walls. We also offer additional handwashing station rentals. Luxury units feature hot and cold running water with sinks similar to traditional restrooms.

Myth 5: Porta-Potties Are Too Expensive

We have years of experience working with budgets of all sizes. You might be surprised with what you can afford! Contact our team to discuss the event scope, size, number of units, and the type of units you prefer. We are happy to walk you through different options!

Myth 6: Luxury Toilets Are The Same As Handicapped Units

Luxury units are different from ADA-compliant restrooms, which follow specific accessibility guidelines. While ADA units are in the more traditional porta-potty style, Luxury units are set up as restroom trailers with multiple stalls and accessories.

Myth 7: You Only Need 1 or 2 Toilets For An Event

There’s nothing worse than having too few restrooms at an event. Long lines for the bathroom can leave even the cheeriest guests feeling disgruntled and make your event memorable for all the wrong reasons. However, you also don’t want to over-book restrooms, spending way more money than needed. So what’s the solution? A thorough event planning process! If you understand the details well, estimating the correct number of restrooms is much easier. Learn more about estimating porta-potties by clicking here
